Roofers who know Ilkley
We carry out roof replacements, solar installations and roofing work across Ilkley and the surrounding Wharfedale villages, including Ben Rhydding, Burley-in-Wharfedale and Addingham. Full re-roofs and solar projects are the work we're most often asked to quote for here.
Ilkley is a town of stone. Much of its housing is Victorian and Edwardian, built in local gritstone with natural slate or stone slate roofs, from substantial villas and semis to terraced rows. Newer homes on the edges of the town add concrete tile and modern slate roofs to the mix.
Ilkley sits in the Wharfe valley beneath open moorland, so roofs here deal with heavy rain, cold winters and wind funnelling along the valley. We travel to Ilkley from our base in Colne and plan each project so the work runs smoothly once the scaffolding is up.

Planning a new roof in Ilkley
Most homeowners in Ilkley only replace a roof once, so it pays to know what a proper job involves before you compare quotes. A full replacement means stripping the old covering right back to the rafters. That lets us check every timber, replace anything rotten or weakened, and fit a new breathable membrane and new treated battens before the slates or tiles go back on. Quotes that skip the strip and simply overlay or patch can look cheaper, but they hide problems that shorten the life of the new roof.
Every full roof replacement we carry out in Ilkley is overseen by building control. That gives you an independent check on the standard of work, and the paperwork you'll want when you come to sell. It also carries a 10-year insurance-backed guarantee, so the guarantee stands even if anything were to happen to the business.
The details are where roofs in West Yorkshire tend to fail: ridges, verges, valleys, chimney flashings and the junctions with neighbouring roofs. We spend time on these because the weather here finds every weak spot. Where it suits the property, we can fit mechanically fixed ridge and verge systems that don't rely on mortar, and we renew lead where it meets chimneys and walls rather than patching it with sealant.
We keep you updated as the work happens. Payments are made in stages as the work progresses, never everything up front. If you're also thinking about solar panels, fitting them while the scaffolding is up in Ilkley saves you paying for access twice.
Common roof problems in Ilkley
Original slate reaching the end of its life
Many of Ilkley's period homes still carry their original slate. The slate can outlast the nails and battens holding it, so slipped slates start appearing after storms. Once that happens across a roof, a full strip and re-roof is usually the lasting answer rather than ongoing repairs.
Heavy stone slate roofs
Some older properties carry stone slate, which is extremely heavy and relies on sound timbers. If a roof has started to sag or leak, we strip back, check every timber and discuss suitable covering options with you before any work starts.
Large roofs well suited to solar
Bigger detached and semi-detached homes often have roof slopes with room for a good solar array. We check the roof first, then fit the panels as roofers so the covering stays watertight. Combining solar with a re-roof means paying for scaffolding once.
Conservation considerations
Parts of Ilkley may fall within conservation areas. We'll discuss materials that suit the property, and you may need to check planning requirements with the council before starting.
